How do Collabs work?

Posted by flashmac - February 24th, 2008

I was just wondering how they work out. Does one person make the drums and another the melody or what?

Also, join the hiphop defence crew if your into hip hop production.

one hosts the collab, make their animation on the subject, others may join in, the owner makes the main menu and all, they send their animations to you, and you put it all together, choose how many fps and size of the thing and thats about it. also when you click "My Account" you will have a flash buddy list, add the people who are joining in the collab :3

Haha, thanks but I was asking about a music collab. Sorry I wasn't clear enough, but thanks anyway!

The few collabs I have done mostly I had a track, let someone take a gander at the work in progress, then they said "lemme have ya .flp man, I'ma throw some craziness on it"...they did that, then ran with it. Or I freestyled a verse, they freestyled a verse and added adlibs, sent it back, then I added my adlibs and a chorus/bridge and some reverb or other fx and finished it up. Mostly it's give and take. If you are a perfectionist, it prolly goes differently, but I've learned to get over my perfectionism with time and now just shrug and let the other artist go crazy creative. If it sounds like shite to me, I give creative critique, but in large part I think music is an art and like all arts, some people will get your art and others won't. For the longest time my beats were so crazy nobody got them, now I've fallen into a comfort zone where I can be creative and I have an audience who vibes off my tracks.

Oh, I get it. So you kinda start a beat and have the person your working with throw some stuff over it and repeat, right?

Well, the way me and YunVeroz collab are quite simple, yet crazy at the same time. For the most part, we're constantly texting each other of ideas for both verses and beats, even though he's in Miami and I'm in New Jersey. And we also go on Druid War Cry's vent server and chat for a good amount there just throwing ideas there. But since we both sample, we zip up the .mp3 and .wav files with the .flp file in the same zip folder, and send away. Surprisingly, you can open zipped files on FL, and everything will be the exact way the other person sent it, samples in place and all. As far as tracks with lyrics, you just have someone send you two copies of their verse. One with the beat, so you can get the exact time the flow starts and/or ends. And one without the beat, so then you can easily equalize it according to your professionalism, and it'll be easier to add more to it afterwards.

I get what your saying. Sounds a lot easier said then done though. And since sampling is a pain in the ass for me, it'd be extra hard because when I do sample, I cut up them up in Audacity which is pretty hard to do. So I'll just leave the sampling to you and YunVeroz, haha.

Well, if you want, I could send you a zip file of something we did, and you have a look at it, mess around with it, and see basically how everything was put into play.

Sounds good but I'm pretty sure you use FL studio. I use Reason and I have a mac, so I'm not sure if it's going to work, but let's give it a shot. Send me an email.

eeeeeew, mac x.x

Yeh, I use FL. x.x

Fuck you! lol
But yeah, I didn't think it was gonna work out anyways.....
